The dissertation explore technology transfer from big science. The first chapter of the dissertation investigates the literature about technology transfer from big science. In particular the study develops a review of the literature on the topic with the aim to understand extant knowledge in management studies about the technology transfer mechanisms in this field of science. The second chapter attempts to understand more about the impact of big science on industrial innovation, through a patent citation analysis. The study focuses on the case of CERN, because of its importance and representativeness. The chapter provides evidence about the impact of CERN patents on industry, identifying the patterns of spillovers and the technological fields on which the impact is realized. The third chapter explores the characteristics of academic spin-offs from physics. Based on the assumption that spin-offs have different characteristics and needs depending on the scientific discipline of origin, this study focuses on the field of physics. The study investigates the characteristics of firms in terms of business model and resource configuration across the entrepreneurial process, and the decision-making approach, conducting three case studies on success cases of spin-off from physics.
