The aims of the dissertation is to analyze the Italian novel between the Eighteenth and the Early Nineteenth century using a non-evolutionary perspective in accordance with the heterogeneity and non-linearity of the literary genre and the texts examined. After the analysis of the state of the research related to this subject, the study focuses on the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth-century scholarly debate on the novel with a special attention on the following central points: the comparison with the Aristotelian theories, the choice of prose, the moral question, the reflection on truth and fiction and, eventually, the relationship with the public. It is thus possible to identify those cases in which the fluidity of the genre is positively perceived as paradigmatic as well as to highlight the presence of those aspects traditionally ascribed to the Romantic age (such as the question of national identity or the limits of Italian culture). The study therefore deals with the literary practice, examining the works of those novelists who wrote after the early Venetian season as representatives of a proved canon. The analysis then underlines the relationship between the represented historical reality in connection with the contemporary reality, the paratext, the main character’s definition and the strategies adopted by novelists in order to distinguish their texts from the features of a more popular literature. Finally, the amorous and the socio-political themes are carried out in relation to the literary ambitions of the novels, to underline how the importance of the second theme and progressive receding of the female figure are a distinctive mark of quality, but in the same time a sign of the crisis of the period.

Abstract
Finally, the amorous and the socio-political themes are carried out in relation to the literary ambitions of the novels, to underline how the importance of the second theme and progressive receding of the female figure are a distinctive mark of quality, but in the same time a sign of the crisis of the period.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
