Introduction: Morbid obesity is often complicated by the presence of depression and poor quality of life. Bariatric surgery aims at improving quality of life of persons with obesity, as well as reducing mortality and medical risk factors. Quality of life assessment is important in clinical care planning, as well as in the evaluation of surgical outcomes. Goals: To assess the quality of life of patient with morbid obesity (BMI≥35 kg/m2) before and after bariatric surgery procedure by using a specific tool that will be validated in Italian, to monitor the progres of prevalent comorbidities and its impact on quality of life. Methods: A multicentric pre post study on a non-randomized sample of patients aged between 19 and 65 years, with morbid obesity and BMI≥35 kg/m2, candidates for bariatric surgery (gastric banding or gastric bypass) was conducted in 2013-2014. A validation study for the Italian version of Laval questionnaire was performed. Quality of life assessment and the evaluation of the trend of comorbidities were carried out in different times of observation. Results: 166 patients were enrolled, mean BMI of 42.8±7.5 kg/m2 (range 31-70). Excellent consistency (alpha>.90) and concurrent validity with the Orwell’s questionnaire (rho=-.78, p<.001). Comorbidities decrease significantly postoperatively. Self-esteem and quality of life improve as the depressive symptoms tend to regress, especially between 3 and 12 months after surgery. Conclusion: Bariatric surgery procedures are proved to be very effective in reducing obesity-related comorbidities and represent a good way to improve quality of life of obese patients.
