Taking the Jiaozhou ji 交州記 (Notes on Jiaozhou) of Liu Xinqi 劉欣期 (ca. 4th century) as a case study, the thesis explores the realm of Early Medieval geographical accounts and their literary and cultural role. Abstract

Taking the Jiaozhou ji 交州記 (Notes on Jiaozhou) of Liu Xinqi 劉欣期 (ca. 4th century) as a case study, the thesis explores the realm of Early Medieval geographical accounts and their literary and cultural role. After a comprehensive description of the genre of diji, the discourse moves to the philological analysis of the Jiaozhou ji, its different collations, internal problematics and incongruences, thus advances a new methodology for a more scientific textual criticism of Chinese lost texts and more accurate collation of the work itself.
