The aim of these pages is to analyze E. J. Lowe’s main theses regarding metaphysics, ontology and philosophy of mind. I intend to show that metaphysics provides the conceptual background of his proposal, and that reality, considered as unitary and self-consistent, and the notions of substance and explanatory resources constitute three essential assumptions. In the first chapter I discuss the metaphysics of Lowe, the relationship between metaphysics, special sciences and intellectual disciplines, and the notions of possibility, substance and time. In the second I analyze his ontological proposal, in particular his ‘four-category ontology’ and its explanatory power. In the third, finally, I discuss his position on the mind-body problem and his reflections on the ontological status of persons.
