This paper is the continuation of my degree thesis, which studied the nearby necropolis of Porta Palio. The aim of this paper is to take a more detailed look at the creation, the development and the characteristics of the largest Roman cemetery of Verona, taken into account the small amount of published data on the necropoli compared to our knowledge of the city’s urban development. To help understand the importance of this funerary area, a small archaeological map charts the burial sites from the end of the first century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. It maps the ancient necropoli, situated outside the city alongside the three major Roman roads, some at a notable distance from the city walls, with a particular preference for the via Postumia. The paper then analyses diachronically the necropolis of via Albere – Prima Traversa Spianà; it recognises three distinct phases of the use and two phases of successive abbandonment. The archiving of the grave goods has led to the completion of a catalogue for individual burials, followed by an interpretation of the finds, initially with the study of their singular classes, and then in the analysis of the funerary rites. At the end of the paper, there is a brief analysis of the other necropoli along the via Postumia at Verona, reconstructing the topographical development of the Roman road, and of the characteristics and modifications of the funerary rites fom the end of the first century B.C. to the fourth century A.D.

Abstract
At the end of the paper, there is a brief analysis of the other necropoli along the via Postumia at Verona, reconstructing the topographical development of the Roman road, and of the characteristics and modifications of the funerary rites fom the end of the first century B.C. to the fourth century A.D.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
