Abstract

Before he ran away and hid from arrest, a Jew child buried in the courtyard of his house at the Lido of Venice, a small Maghen David, “his little treasure”. This concealment could be seen as a metaphor for the plight of Jewish children in Italy. During the months following September 8, 1943 and until the end of the war they had to hide even the smallest sign of their Jewish membership to survive the persecution. Focusing from a child's perspective, this thesis means to investigate how these young people have faced living underground for months, the marks this experience left in their lives and how they lost or refund their Judaism after the end of the persecution. I tried to reconstruct the role played by Italian Zionists and Jewish Brigade (which was sent to fight in Italy alongside the Allies) in rescuing these children. I also attempted to understand the reasons why Italian historiography and psychology have not dedicated sufficient concern to this issue, as for example did the Anglo-Saxon world, France and Israel. So Italy hidden children's history is a way to put together, from an undisclosed point of view, the approach to “wounded life” across an entire generation who passed through the Nazi-fascist persecution.
