We develop an abstract theory for the profile decomposition of H1 sequences based on the concentration compactness method introduced by Kenig and Merle. We study in an abstract setting the NLS theory and we construct under proper assumptions a critical solution, used to prove scattering. We apply the abstract theory to a fully variable coefficients operator.

Abstract
