The research work considers the characteristics, evolution, and territorial impacts of tourism. Moreover it analyses the evolution of geographical studies on tourism, until the most recent trends. A focus is set on the sustainability of tourism, with particular regard to the most important international documents concenrning the environment, local communities and cultural heritage. Routes for tourism and culture are considered priviledge instruments to promote the sustainability of tourism. A methodologicl proposal for the creation of a "long-distance path" named "La Via Adriatica dalla Baviera all'Epiro" tries to give a demonstration of this.
