Attilio Bertolucci is a «central figure in the literature and culture of the second half of the twentieth century today often overlooked, if not forgotten, by multiple “areas” of criticism and poetry» (Donzelli). This thesis aims to reconsider his poetic work. In particular, the purpose is to understand Bertolucci’s poetry as a product of the author’s constant dialogue with European literature. Indeed, from this dialogue it derived its distinctive features. The privileged tools from a methodological point of view are the author’s archival papers and critical prose. On the basis of a conception of poetry «as an interhuman praxis, as a socio-relational fact and activity», this extraneous material makes it possible to identify the «network of relations» (Ghidinelli) that substantiates Bertolucci’s work, helping to return a more faithful image of it. In virtue of these assumptions, the author’s books are analysed to specifically explore the dialogue from which each of them arose and together account for the evolution of this dialogue over time. The result is a European poetic history.
