The thesis explores the role of the Istituto Luce in the construction and dissemination of visual propaganda during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936), analyzing its contribution to the fascist regime's imperialist narrative. Through the examination of newsreels, documentaries, and photographs, the study investigates the communication strategies used to legitimize the colonial aggression and promote a triumphant view of the imperialist enterprise. The research is based on a wide range of primary sources from the Istituto Luce archive and other documentary collections, combining historical and semiotic analysis methods to interpret the propagandistic messages conveyed. Special attention is given to the representation of Italian national identity in relation to African otherness, with the aim of understanding how these images shaped the collective imagination and contributed to the formation of an imperialist identity. The thesis also highlights the crucial role of audiovisual media in building widespread support for fascist colonial policies, revealing the power dynamics underlying the production and circulation of such materials. The work is positioned at the intersection of history, postcolonial studies, and media studies, offering a critical reflection on the memory of Italian colonialism and its cultural legacies.
