The most complex, thorny, and controversial subject within architectural discourse has always been that of the city, closely followed by the concept of space. This meaning, having changed throughout history, is in a state of perpetual transformation with fashions and customs, allowing the thesis to investigate how and in what aspects the city has reflected an increasingly evident inclination towards individualism. Through the attempt to provide the reader with “new lenses” to observe urban reality, the research examines the possible death, perhaps foreshadowed, of the concept of the city, the result of a perpetual chase of the "myth" of the ideal city that clashes with its antithesis, the "anti myth",namely the contemporary city. The opposition between its meanings and signifiers, the continuous internal conflict of its components (such as the city of God and the city of man, the open city and the closed city, and so on), which can be read as physiological characteristics of the urban, is in crisis in the contemporary context, that is, a condition in which its parts collapse under the manifestation of an individualizing attitude, where parts of the urban equilibrium equation trigger a domino effect on all concepts related to the city and its main components. One of the main symptoms of individualist drift in the contemporary city is the opposition between public and private space, where neither case finds adequately opposing characteristics to allow for a balance between the two. In a society where the necessity of limits is so ingrained in the conception of space and crucial for the livability of it by the individual, from the perspective of an increasingly individualized society, the modern tendency of individuals to safeguard their intimate dimension leads them to create perpetual enclosures that continually allow them to maintain control over urban space, thus becoming defining elements of the city. The thesis attempts to outline those architectural translations that manifest this desire of the individual to isolate themselves within the contemporary city, in all its declensions.
L’argomento più complesso, spinoso e controverso all’interno della trattazione architettonica, è sempre stato quello della città, seguito, molto da vicino, dal concetto di spazio. Tale significato, essendo cambiato nel corso della storia, in perenne mutamento con le mode e i costumi, permette alla tesi di indagare in che modo e sotto quali aspetti la città è stata riflesso di una sempre più evidente attitudine all’individualismo. Attraverso il tentativo di consegnare al lettore delle “lenti nuove” per osservare la realtà urbana, la ricerca esamina la possibile ora del decesso, forse preannunciata, del concetto di città, frutto di un perpetuo rincorrere il mito della città ideale che si scontra con il suo contraltare di antimito, ovvero la città contemporanea. La contrapposizione tra i suoi significati e significanti, la continua opposizione interna delle sue componenti (come la città di Dio e la città degli uomini, la città aperta e la città chiusa e via dicendo), che possono essere letti come caratteristiche fisiologiche dell’urbano, entrano in crisi nel contemporaneo, ovvero una condizione in cui le sue parti crollano sotto la manifestazione di un atteggiamento individualizzante in cui parti dell’equazione di equilibrio urbano innescano un effetto-domino su tutti i concetti legati alla città e alle sue componenti principali. Uno dei sintomi principali della deriva individualista nella città contemporanea è la contrapposizione di spazio pubblico e spazio privato, che nell’uno e nell’altro caso non trovano più caratteristiche idoneamente contrapposte per permettere un equilibrio tra le due. In una società in cui la necessità del limite è così insita nella concezione dello spazio e determinante per la vivibilità di questo, da parte dell’individuo, in un’ottica di società sempre più individualizzata, la tendenza dell’uomo moderno a salvaguardare la sua dimensione intimistica lo porta a creare recinti perpetui che continuamente gli permettono di mantenere il controllo sullo spazio urbano, diventando essi degli elementi caratterizzanti la città. La tesi tenta di delineare quelle traduzioni architettoniche che manifestano questa volontà di isolarsi dell’individuo all’interno della città contemporanea, in tutte le sue declinazioni.
