In this thesis, we will investigate the relationship between mathematical practice and culture, focusing on the cognitive aspects rooted in culture and involved in mathematical practice. By adopting a socio-cultural approach, we will delve into the cultural differences in mathematical problem solving shown by students from different cultural and family backgrounds, Chinese and non-Chinese, in Prato (Italy). The phases of designing and redesigning mathematical tasks will be discussed and the results will be analyzed, both from an epistemological and cultural point of view, with a specific focus on the role of Chinese written language as a mediator of cognitive processes shared by mathematical practice.

Abstract
In this thesis, we will investigate the relationship between mathematical practice and culture, focusing on the cognitive aspects rooted in culture and involved in mathematical practice. By adopting a socio-cultural approach, we will delve into the cultural differences in mathematical problem solving shown by students from different cultural and family backgrounds, Chinese and non-Chinese, in Prato (Italy). The phases of designing and redesigning mathematical tasks will be discussed and the results will be analyzed, both from an epistemological and cultural point of view, with a specific focus on the role of Chinese written language as a mediator of cognitive processes shared by mathematical practice.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
