In the context of contemporary territorial transformations, this research investigates the informal settlement conditions of migrant populations in the rural territories of Sicily and Andalusia. Informal living, the expression of a systemic and multi-level exclusion, is configured as an autonomous and rationally structured, albeit precarious, housing modality that challenges the traditional categories defined by territorial planning. Through an integrated methodology, based on theoretical analysis, GIS mapping and field research, the thesis analyses two case studies: the settlement between Campobello di Mazara and Castelvetrano in Sicily, and the ‘chabolas’ of Atochares in Almería, Andalusia. The results show how these settlements, despite their conditions of legal invisibility and spatial marginality, constitute active spaces of resistance, adaptation and self-organisation, revealing a structural tension between migratory governance and spatial justice. The research proposes a critical reinterpretation of the role of planning, highlighting the urgency of tools capable of recognising and integrating these forms of settlement, overcoming emergency responses and promoting inclusive practices oriented at reducing territorial inequalities.

Abstract
The research proposes a critical reinterpretation of the role of planning, highlighting the urgency of tools capable of recognising and integrating these forms of settlement, overcoming emergency responses and promoting inclusive practices oriented at reducing territorial inequalities.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
