Although part of our daily lives for decades, interfaces are a hard to define technology. Whileas many different disciplines and approaches have tried to give a definition of it, little effort has been done to classify, distinguish and define different categories of interfaces. The present work aims to investigate different definitions and mechanisms pertaining to the concept of interface through philosophy, media archaeology and disability and critical studies to structure a critical taxonomy of the computer interface. The grand set computer interfaces constitute has been divided in three main ontological classes, each associated with a strong norm that defines all other categories in the same class. Furthermore, the work proposes to observe how the normalizing mechanisms and the processes of exclusion, descending from different devices and previous technology, contribute to the definition of the norm itself on the bodily, cultural, social and political levels.
