The research aims to systematise the bibliography and archival records, often unpublished, on public and private urban baths in the municipia during the Roman period, in order to study the phenomenon of bathing in Apulia. Historical and archaeological data, as well as the defining elements of the baths, are contextualised for the first time within the urban and regional context. The result is a fragmented picture that is analysed in terms of local social, economic, political and geomorphological characteristics, as well as the different levels of settlement and urbanisation. The study examines the close relationship that existed, throughout the different phases of urban development, between urban planning, acts of benefaction, and the location of baths. These monuments were always situated in strategic and central locations, including suburban areas, and were often closely linked to the main road axes. The location chosen for the construction of the baths highlights the central role of this type of structure in the social and economic life of the Roman period, with interesting solutions documented in both public and private construction. For the first time, the baths of Apulia are also analysed on the basis of literary and epigraphic sources, taking into account the regulations and ownership, aspects that are strongly reflected in the architectural solutions adopted. The buildings are systematically compared and studied on the basis of typological possibilities, planimetric choices, construction techniques, construction phases, decorative programmes, as well as the technologies used for heating and water supply. All this is closely linked to the chronological, administrative and geographical context. The baths are also linked to the economy of the municipalities, to data on the urban population and to the structure of society. For the first time in Apulia, therefore, they are analysed in terms of their impact on everyday life, from a socio-economic point of view and, above all, in terms of the development of a new type of entrepreneurial activity, obviously linked to the ever-increasing need to satisfy the needs not only of the inhabitants of municipalities but also of travellers, taking into account the factor of mobility, which is not always appreciated in relation to bathing and other aspects of urban life.

Abstract
For the first time in Apulia, therefore, they are analysed in terms of their impact on everyday life, from a socio-economic point of view and, above all, in terms of the development of a new type of entrepreneurial activity, obviously linked to the ever-increasing need to satisfy the needs not only of the inhabitants of municipalities but also of travellers, taking into account the factor of mobility, which is not always appreciated in relation to bathing and other aspects of urban life.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
