The research aims to investigate the entire process related to the creative act in architecture, dwelling carefully on the stages preceding the definition of form, in which decisive choices are guided by a method. In particular, the investigation identifies analogy as one of the possible tools of the creative process: a means capable of establishing a profound bond of knowledge with what is taken as a model, thus enabling a move away from mere copying. The starting point of the research is the figure of Paul Marvin Rudolph, an American architect active mainly in the 1960s, whose commitment was divided between teaching and the profession. Insight into his thinking and his key principles-the six determinants of architectural form-become the pretext for reflecting on the creative process of art in general and architecture in tracing the steps that, starting from theory and through a method, lead to construction.
La ricerca si propone di indagare il processo legato all'atto creativo in architettura, soffermandosi con attenzione alle fasi che precedono la definizione della forma, in cui le scelte decisive sono guidate da un metodo. In particolare, l’indagine individua nell’analogia uno degli strumenti possibili del processo creativo: un mezzo capace di instaurare un legame profondo di conoscenza con ciò che viene preso a modello, consentendo così di allontanarsi dalla mera copia. Il punto di partenza della ricerca è la figura di Paul Marvin Rudolph, architetto americano attivo prevalentemente negli anni Sessanta, il cui impegno si è diviso tra l’insegnamento e la professione. L’approfondimento sul suo pensiero e sui suoi principi chiave - le sei determinanti della forma architettonica - diventano il pretesto per riflettere sul processo creativo dell’arte in generale e dell’architettura in particolare ripercorrendo i passaggi che, partendo dalla teoria e attraverso un metodo, conducono alla costruzione.
