In recent years, reducing vehicle weight has made Magnesium alloys attractive. Due to its low density, it is possible to achieve from 30% up to 70% of weight reduction. However, many technical and commercial barriers limit the series application of Magnesium parts. In this Thesis a general overview on material, manufacturing, coatings and costs will be given. Then, feasiblity study of a bonnet made of AZ31B alloy will be presented with a focus on stress-strain analysis of AZ31B, FEM simulation results and formability analysis.

Abstract

In recent years, reducing vehicle weight has made Magnesium alloys attractive. Due to its low density, it is possible to achieve from 30% up to 70% of weight reduction. However, many technical and commercial barriers limit the series application of Magnesium parts. In this Thesis a general overview on material, manufacturing, coatings and costs will be given. Then, feasiblity study of a bonnet made of AZ31B alloy will be presented with a focus on stress-strain analysis of AZ31B, FEM simulation results and formability analysis.
