The underlying theme of this PhD dissertation is the analysis of social policy, education system and human capital development in the context of a developing country. The thesis makes use of rich datasets on childhood poverty in Vietnam and consists of two papers, each corresponding to a chapter. The first chapter, titled “The effects of the Vietnam Hunger Eradication and Poverty Reduction program on schooling”, is a joint work with Lorenzo Rocco and Marco Bertoni. The second chapter, “Paying (and paving) my way: the impacts of extra class participation on primary school pupils in Vietnam”, takes a closer look at the issues of transparency and equality within the education system.
