This dissertation provides the first systematic investigation of cross-linguistic influence phenomena in adult learners of German as a foreign language whose L1 is Italian. The study focuses on the German vowels /ə/ and /y:/, which have been reported in literature as particularly challenging for Italian learners. Both perceptual and productive dimensions are examined, taking into account strictly linguistic and usage-related factors such as language proficiency, language dominance, and the breadth of the individual’s linguistic repertoire.
