This dissertation provides the first systematic investigation of cross-linguistic influence phenomena in adult learners of German as a foreign language whose L1 is Italian. The study focuses on the German vowels /ə/ and /y:/, which are commonly reported as particularly challenging for Italian learners. Both perceptual and productive dimensions are examined, considering linguistic and sociolinguistic factors such as language competence, dominance, and the breadth of the individual’s linguistic repertoire.

Abstract
