In the field of positive psychology, there is a growing scientific interest in studying the development of certain character strengths in children. Character strengths consist of a group of positive traits that form the foundation of children’s socio-emotional and cognitive skills. The VIA Classification of Strengths and Virtues, along with the corresponding questionnaire for children (ages 3-6), known as the Character Strengths Inventory for Early Childhood (CSI-EC), defines character strengths based on universally shared virtues and strengths. To date, the scientific literature presents psychometric analyses of constructs based on philosophy, history, and cultural studies, which are highly interesting; however, it also highlights a significant gap in the analysis of children’s virtues and strengths, as well as those of caregivers and families in general. Meaning Making Theory emphasizes that the process of meaning construction is vital for a child’s development and learning, and it is crucial to consider the role of context. In this project, psychometric analysis will be combined with the meaning-making approach to investigate the virtues and strengths of young children within the Italian context. This research has three phases. First, a literature review was conducted regarding positive psychology in early childhood education. Second, we validated a parent questionnaire on the character strengths of their children (developed by Shoshani, 2019), using the Exploratory Graphic Analyses (EGA). A total of 123 parent reports were analysed in this phase. We modified the questionnaire based on the results of our analyses and the suggestions from existing literature, which resulted in the development of the Italian version of the Character Strengths Inventory for Early Childhood, Condensed Version (CSI-ItaCC). We also examined the associations between character strengths and the emotional well-being of children using regression analyses. Third, we interviewed parents (N = 14), teachers (N = 20), and children (N = 29) regarding their understanding of character strengths. We analysed the similarities and differences in their perspectives. Finally, some suggestions were provided to early childhood professionals to increase their awareness of character strengths.
