The following doctoral thesis, entitled "Reading Experiences and Environmental Exploration in Place-Based Literary Education: A Collective Case Study", is the final result of qualitative research conducted as part of the doctoral program in “Technologies and Methods for University Education” in the three-year period 2022-2025 (cycle XXXVIII).The study in question, originally entitled "Mountain Notebooks", focused on place-based literary education as a teaching method that links the processes of teaching and learning literature to the environments in which they take place. In particular, it was decided to set up a collective case study involving three comprehensive schools located in mountainous or inland areas of the peninsula, in order to collect, analyze, and interpret data useful for describing how students experienced and reported their educational experience during a place-based reading and writing activity. Therefore, the research question that underpinned this work was as follows: how do students from three small lower secondary schools in mountainous or inland areas experience and report on their participation in a place-based literary education activity? To answer this question, six place-based reading and writing activities were designed and carried out, with a total of 102 students participating. The researcher's observations of these teaching experiences were followed by a meticulous reflexive thematic analysis of 93 semi-structured interview protocols with students, collected in the days following the activities, as well as 66 texts written by them as part of outdoor writing assignments. The careful processing of this large amount of data made it possible to develop a sequence of six themes that provide an in-depth, empirically based, and theoretically sound portrait of the place-based literary education experience as it was experienced and reported by the students.
