THIS RESEARCH EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERATURE AND INDUSTRY IN POST-WAR ITALY THROUGH A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF FOUR CORPORATE MAGAZINES, «PIRELLI», «CIVILTÀ DELLE MACCHINE», «COMUNITÀ» E «IL GATTO SELVATICO», WHICH, BETWEEN THE 1950S AND 1960S, BECAME PRIVILEGED SPACES FOR DIALOGUE BETWEEN HUMANISTIC CULTURE AND TECHNICAL-SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE. THE AIM IS TO RECONSTRUCT THE ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION THESE HOUSE ORGANS OFFERED TO THE DEBATE ON THE “TWO CULTURES,” SHIFTING ATTENTION FROM THE THEORETICAL PLANE TO THE CONCRETE REALM OF EDITORIAL PRACTICES, WHERE WRITERS, POETS, CRITICS, AND ENGINEERS ENGAGED DIRECTLY WITH INDUSTRIAL MODERNITY. THE THESIS EXAMINES, ON THE ONE HAND, THE HISTORICAL, ECONOMIC, AND CULTURAL CONTEXT OF ITALY’S INDUSTRIAL BOOM, AND ON THE OTHER, THE THEORETICAL REFLECTIONS THAT, RANGING FROM SNOW TO VITTORINI, FROM CALVINO TO ECO, FROM FORTINI TO LEVI, RESHAPED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND LITERATURE IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY ITALIAN CULTURE. BUILDING ON A PHILOLOGICAL, INTERDISCIPLINARY, AND COMPARATIVE METHODOLOGY, THE CONTRIBUTIONS PUBLISHED IN THE SELECTED MAGAZINES WERE CATALOGUED AND ANALYSED ACCORDING TO RECURRING THEMATIC NUCLEI, MAN AND MACHINE, MAN AND FACTORY, TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS, INDUSTRY AND IMAGINATION, SO AS TO HIGHLIGHT POINTS OF CONVERGENCE, DIVERGENCE, AND EVOLUTION WITHIN THE BROADER CULTURAL DISCOURSE. THE FIGURES OF LEONARDO SINISGALLI, ADRIANO OLIVETTI, AND ATTILIO BERTOLUCCI, EXAMINED IN THEIR RESPECTIVE EDITORIAL ROLES, EMERGE AS KEY PROTAGONISTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW INDUSTRIAL HUMANISM CAPABLE OF INTEGRATING POETIC SENSIBILITY, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND TECHNICAL RATIONALITY. THE MAGAZINES THEY DIRECTED REVEAL THEMSELVES AS GENUINE INTELLECTUAL LABORATORIES IN WHICH TECHNOLOGY IS NEITHER CELEBRATED UNCRITICALLY NOR FEARED, BUT RATHER INTERPRETED AS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF MODERNITY. THE STUDY DEMONSTRATES THAT THE HOUSE ORGANS OF MAJOR ITALIAN COMPANIES, OFTEN DISMISSED AS MERE INSTRUMENTS OF INTERNAL COMMUNICATION, ACTUALLY PLAYED A CRUCIAL ROLE IN REDEFINING THE INDUSTRIAL IMAGINARY AND SHAPING A CULTURE OF MODERNITY. THEY BEAR WITNESS TO A PROGRESSIVE HYBRIDISATION OF KNOWLEDGE THAT MOVES BEYOND THE OPPOSITION BETWEEN THE TWO CULTURES TOWARD AN INTEGRATED VISION OF KNOWLEDGE, ANTICIPATING CONTEMPORARY FORMS OF INTERDISCIPLINARITY. THE THESIS THUS OFFERS A NEW READING OF THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN LITERATURE AND TECHNOLOGY IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY ITALY, SHOWING HOW, WITHIN THE PAGES OF CORPORATE MAGAZINES, A CULTURAL PROJECT WAS ARTICULATED THAT SOUGHT TO RECONCILE PROGRESS, RESPONSIBILITY, AND CRITICAL AWARENESS: A FORM OF TECHNOLOGICAL HUMANISM THAT STANDS AS ONE OF THE MOST ORIGINAL LEGACIES OF ITALY’S INDUSTRIAL MODERNITY.
