This dissertation reassesses the organization and personnel of the praefectura annonae from Augustus to Constantine, updating Henriette Pavis d’Escurac’s 1976 study through systematic prosopographical revision and newly available epigraphic and papyrological evidence. It reconstructs the hierarchy and functions of officials operating under the prefect (adiutores, subprefects, procurators, port administrators, and extraordinary agents) while refining chronologies and identifying new figures. The study also re-evaluates the relationship between the Roman prefecture and provincial officials, arguing that several Egyptian and Numidian procurators were collaborators rather than permanent subordinates. The result is a more precise picture of the administrative mechanisms that secured Rome’s food supply and of the evolving structure of imperial logistical governance.
