L'uso performativo del Prodotto Interno Lordo (PIL). Un'analisi filosofica

Understanding Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is not merely a technical matter: it means engaging with one of the most influential instruments in shaping economic policies and social priorities. This research examines GDP from a philosophical perspective, with the aim of contributing to the contemporary debate on whether its growth should be pursued. The analysis adopts a multidisciplinary approach, applying the concept of economic performativity to explore the role of GDP as a device capable of actively shaping the configuration of social and economic reality through the theoretical framework that supports its interpretation. The work is structured in three parts: (1) an introduction to the concept of economic performativity; (2) an assessment of the performativity of the theories underlying GDP; (3) a philosophical analysis of the theoretical, methodological, and ethical implications of such performativity. It concludes that GDP contributes to realising normative visions characteristic of the neoclassical tradition, rooted in assumptions and axioms of welfare theory that are implicitly taken up in economic practice. This finding should be regarded as a call for greater awareness of performative effects and for a clear assumption of ethical and political responsibility by economists and policymakers in the use of this indicator.

Comprendere il Prodotto Interno Lordo (PIL) non è soltanto una questione tecnica: significa interrogarsi su uno degli strumenti più influenti nella definizione delle politiche economiche e delle priorità sociali. La ricerca affronta il PIL da una prospettiva filosofica, con l’obiettivo di contribuire al dibattito contemporaneo sull’opportunità di perseguirne la crescita. L’analisi adotta un approccio multidisciplinare, applicando il concetto di performatività economica per esplorare il ruolo del PIL come dispositivo capace di influenzare attivamente la configurazione della realtà sociale ed economica, attraverso il complesso teorico che ne sostiene l’interpretazione. Il lavoro si articola in tre momenti: (1) introduzione al concetto di performatività economica; (2) verifica della performatività delle teorie sottese al PIL; (3) analisi filosofica delle implicazioni teoriche, metodologiche ed etiche di tale performatività. Si conclude che il PIL contribuisce a realizzare visioni normative proprie della tradizione neoclassica, radicate in ipotesi e assiomi della teoria del benessere che sono assunti implicitamente nella pratica economica. Questa evidenzia deve essere considerata come un sollecito a una maggiore consapevolezza degli effetti performativi e a una chiara assunzione di responsabilità etico-politica da parte di economisti e di decisori politici nell’utilizzo di tale indicatore.
