The present thesis investigates the ritual and the ceremonial dimension of an urban reality of the Venetian Mainland: the city of Bergamo. The point of departure of the analysis is constituted by the "Book of the Ceremonials" compiled by the chancellors starting from the end of the XVII century. The investigation follows three directives: the first one considers the defining aspects of the cultural and ritual identity of the City of Bergamo and it has for objective to reconstruct the festive civic calendar and to investigate some of the more recurrent ritual occasions in their socio-political implications. The second one aims to individualize the uses and the functions of the public devotional rituality during the XVIII century and to reconstruct some disputes which arose between the ecclesiastical institution and the City in the management of the "immaterial patrimony". Finally, the third one, intends to clarify the cultural and political relationship between the civic institution and the republican one: for this purpose, some of the principal ceremonies that were constituted around the "Rectors" are considered, such as the ceremonials entrances and exits from the City, the ceremonies of baptism of their children, the elections to the "patronage", as well as the cases in which some of these ceremonies were disturbed in order to express contestatory positions.
