This study analyses the Regional Photographic Archive of Sicilian Art (AFRAS) at the University of Palermo from historical, methodological, and conservation perspectives, with particular attention to its evolution from analogue to digital formats. Established in 1973 on the initiative of Maurizio Calvesi, the archive was designed to systematically document Sicily’s artistic heritage through photographic campaigns, acquisitions, and educational activities linked to the Institute of Art History; it was from the outset a tool for research and scholarly output.Building on the epistemological potential of photographic archives—both analogue and digital—this research examines the role of photography in the history of art history, highlighting its status not only as a visual document but also as a material object situated within specific spatial, temporal, and cultural contexts. From this perspective, the photographic archive is interpreted as a complex system in which the documentary dimension is intertwined with the material and conservation dimensions. The reconstruction of AFRAS’s history and stratification highlights the variety of materials held and the role of university theses and the publications of the ‘Quaderni dell’AFRAS’ in the collection's progressive development. On this basis, the project addresses the inventorying, reorganisation, and conservation analysis of the cardboard-mounted positives, highlighting the shortcomings of the original classification system and proposing a reorganisation of the collection according to geographical and functional criteria (Sicily, Italy, Abroad, Photographers), accompanied by measures to safeguard the materials. In parallel, the research develops cataloguing and digital tools in line with ICCD standards, through the design of the ‘Nuovo AFRAS’ database, aimed at the description, management, and promotion of the photographic heritage. Specific attention is devoted to the Palermo sub-series, with reference to the provincial area, which is analysed as a case study for its documentary richness and its contribution to the reconstruction of the city’s urban and artistic heritage.Overall, the research highlights how AFRAS constitutes a dynamic and multi-layered archive, the full potential of which requires the integration of conservation practices, scientific reorganisation, and digital tools, thereby contributing to the development of methodological models for the management and access to the historical and artistic photographic heritage.
