This thesis develops an applied approach to accessibility and inclusion in archaeological parks, with a specific focus on visitors aged 65+. The guiding assumption is that adopting Design for All criteria, oriented toward complex needs, helps improve the overall quality of heritage experiences for the entire public. The Archaeological Park of Urbs Salvia is adopted as a case study, and accessibility is embedded within site governance by adopting the Common Sustainable Governance Model developed in the TRANSFER project. The research design combines: (1) a critical analysis of regulations, policy guidance and standards for accessibility in cultural heritage and tourism; (2) a comparative review of good practices; and (3) a field-based assessment through Existing Situation Analysis. The assessment examines barriers and enabling conditions across four dimensions: physical accessibility (slopes, level changes, surfaces, and route continuity), sensory accessibility, cognitive and informational accessibility (wayfinding, readability and content hierarchy), and organisational accessibility (welcome and reception, skills and training, visitor services, pre-visit communication and digital accessibility). Two questionnaires, addressed to regional archaeological park managers and to residents aged 65+, support the interpretation of needs, expectations and perceived barriers. The main contribution is the definition of an operational Accessibility Plan for Urbs Salvia, structured around physical, sensory, cognitive and organisational domains and translated into actions, priorities and implementation phases. The plan integrates internal mobility measures to manage elevation differences, an essential orientation and interpretation system strengthened by proximity-based digital content, and a continuous monitoring model grounded in the Plan–Do–Check–Act cycle. The thesis also proposes a replicable planning format for comparable archaeological contexts, showing how accessibility can function not only as a technical requirement but also as a driver of heritage enhancement, experience quality and management sustainability.
La tesi sviluppa un approccio applicato all’accessibilità e all’inclusione nei parchi archeologici, con particolare attenzione all’utenza over 65. L’assunto guida è che l’adozione di criteri di Design for All, orientati a bisogni complessi, contribuisca a migliorare la qualità della fruizione per l’intero pubblico. La ricerca assume il Parco Archeologico di Urbs Salvia come caso studio e integra l’accessibilità nella governance del sito, adottando come quadro metodologico il Common Sustainable Governance Model del progetto TRANSFER. Il disegno di ricerca combina: (1) analisi critica di norme, indirizzi e standard per l’accessibilità nei luoghi della cultura e nel turismo; (2) ricognizione comparativa di buone pratiche; (3) valutazione sul campo tramite Existing Situation Analysis. L’analisi considera barriere e facilitatori lungo quattro dimensioni: accessibilità fisica (pendenze, dislivelli, superfici, continuità dei percorsi), accessibilità sensoriale, accessibilità cognitiva e informativa (wayfinding, leggibilità, gerarchia dei contenuti), accessibilità organizzativa (accoglienza, competenze, servizi, comunicazione pre-visita e accessibilità digitale). Due questionari, rivolti ai responsabili di parchi archeologici regionali e a residenti over 65, supportano la lettura dei bisogni, delle aspettative e delle criticità percepite. Il contributo principale è la definizione di un Piano di Accessibilità operativo per Urbs Salvia, strutturato su assi fisico, sensoriale, cognitivo e organizzativo, articolato in azioni, priorità e fasi di attuazione. Il Piano integra misure di mobilità interna per la gestione dei dislivelli, un sistema essenziale di orientamento e interpretazione potenziato da contenuti digitali di prossimità e un modello di monitoraggio continuo basato sul ciclo Plan–Do–Check–Act. La tesi propone inoltre un formato replicabile per altri contesti archeologici, evidenziando come l’accessibilità possa funzionare non solo come requisito tecnico, ma come leva di valorizzazione, qualità dell’esperienza e sostenibilità gestionale.
