Pietro Gradenigo’s (1695-1776) "Notatori" are the subject of this research: thirty-eight manuscript volumes – preserved in the Library of Museo Correr – in which news about economic, political and administrative topics is registered, as well as news about historical-artistic topics, concerning Venice and neighbouring territories, between the 2nd January 1748 and the 31st December 1773. The "Notatori" are still an essential point of reference for the study of Serenissima in the XVIII century, and they are so often cited in both scientific and popular publications. At present, the only investigation on the "Notatori" dates back to 1942, when Lina Livan published "Notizie d’arte e di artisti": a book in which it is possible to find the transcription of some of the notes registered by Gradenigo, at times complemented by a short comment. The objective of this research was to enter into the study of the contents and the structure of "Notatori", thus considering them for the first time part of a much wider study project which led Gradenigo to devote much of his existence to research archive and to give life to a library with over 500 manuscripts. Starting from the analysis of the historical-artistic notes contained in the "Notatori", it has been possible to obtain a lot of information also in the working method and on the intellectual profile of Pietro Gradenigo, hitherto poorly investigated. The first part of the thesis offers an in-depth study on the private life of Pietro Gradenigo and on his relationship with his collaborators – copyists, designers and correspondents – who supported him in his research and in the drafting of precious codes. They actively contributed to the formation of the rich library of Gradenigo that here was possible to investigate through unpublished documents. Gradenigo’s notes made it possible to lay the foundations for a first reconstruction of his collection which included paintings, sculptures, antiquities, medals, seals and prints. Fundamental was also the recovery of nearly three hundred letters and the identification of over eighty correspondents, thus initiating an unpublished study of Gradenigo’s epistolary. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the critical analysis of a selection of about two thousand historical-artistic notes extracted by the "Notatori".
