In the marine ecosystem, plankton stands out for the complexity of its communities. An enormous number of different species interact with one another, compete for survival, and at the same time, provide sustenance for the entire ecosystem. In addition, plankton organisms present a highly expressed functional diversity, varying in morphology, size, feeding behavior, nutrient uptake, motility, reproductive strategies, and more. However, the description of biological diversity is still roughly approximated in numerical models, which often lack in realism by sinning in over simplicity. In particular, in the Mediterranean Sea, there are no biogeochemical models able to capture the ecological complexity of the plankton community. With this thesis, we have explored how functional diversity influences the community structure in the plankton community, in a realistic oceanographic context. We have, in particular, implemented the first biogeochemical model with a high functional diversity for the Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to this tool, we have explored plankton diversity in the basin, by enlightening the spatial and temporal patterns that emerge both locally and globally, and evaluating the state of the system with metrics able to disentangle the role played by diversity in this community.

Abstract
Thanks to this tool, we have explored plankton diversity in the basin, by enlightening the spatial and temporal patterns that emerge both locally and globally, and evaluating the state of the system with metrics able to disentangle the role played by diversity in this community.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
