In the context of the construction sector’s transition toward biocircular and regenerative models aimed at decarbonizing the built environment, this research proposes a definition of the concept of Circular Bio-hybrid Building Systems (CBBS). These are construction systems that integrate an organic, bio-based component (derived from organic waste or cultivated materials) with an inorganic, second-life component (originating from reuse or, secondarily, recycling processes), both sourced by prioritizing local processes. The two components are combined to ensure a life cycle consistent with Cradle to Cradle principles: the system, which is biocompatible and potentially bioreceptive, must be disassemblable or, alternatively, reintroducible into a production process without separation. The application of a set of KPIs for assessing the circularity of CBBS, built on the metrics found in the literature, demonstrates that the bio-hybrid combination is an effective strategy for reducing overall carbon impacts. This is achieved by exploiting the potential of natural materials for active CO₂ sequestration and the advantages of second-life components in terms of reduced extraction and processing of raw materials. Through the analysis of case studies at the product scale and then at the architectural scale, the research proposes the Atlas of Scenarios: an operational tool, composed of the KPI set, a Decision Tree for circular design obtained by abstracting virtuous design processes, and a collection of models of CBBS envelope combinations, conceived to support designers in the early-stage design of circular bio-hybrid building systems.

Abstract
Through the analysis of case studies at the product scale and then at the architectural scale, the research proposes the Atlas of Scenarios: an operational tool, composed of the KPI set, a Decision Tree for circular design obtained by abstracting virtuous design processes, and a collection of models of CBBS envelope combinations, conceived to support designers in the early-stage design of circular bio-hybrid building systems.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
