The research project is structured according to a mobile internal structuring - which primarily involves a necessary relocation of Luigi Capuana's work - especially the dramaturgical and theatrical criticism ones - into the canon of modernity; and which, on the other hand, suggests a mapping of regional realism, investigating in this case the Apulian ones (with hints of the Lucanian ones), which takes into account the themes and ways of receiving national realism - and above all of Capuanian meaning – in regional literary production. The first chapter goes through Capuana's first dramaturgical production, also in verse (1857 -1864) - from Ghisola, unfinished, to Agnese Visconti, from Sordello to the dramatic legend in three cantos Garibaldi and fragments of the «tragicomic fola» of the Princess - and the prolific activity of reviewer for the theater on the «Nazione» and the «Rivista italica» (1864-1872), after arriving in Florence; production unknown and which intercepts its models in the historical and civil drama (Guerrazzi, Prati, Berchet) that Capuana, through dramatic criticism, will begin to overcome in the direction of the Florentine “reality bath”, coinciding with the readings from De Sanctis, from Hegel, from the doctor-philosopher De Meis, from Trezza and from the French Sardou, Augier, Dumas fils, in addition to the friendship with Verga, which suggestions will lead to a vision of the art of modernity coinciding with the concept of an equally modern “form” based on the instance of truth coinciding, rather than with theatre, with the novel. The writings of the contemporary Italian Theater (1872) x-ray this passage through reviews, among others, of Torelli, Giacometti, Giovagnoli, Augier, Marenco. In the second chapter, the arrival at the “form” suitable for contemporaneity is progressively enucleated through the analysis of the writings contained in the two Series of Studies on Contemporary Literature (1880-1882), in which, through the study of the works of Verga, Zola, De Goncourt, Daudet, Cossa and others, Capuana arrives at the enunciation, paradigmatic in Verga's work, of a “truth-form” that fully expresses the modern “science of literature”, which contemplates, in the work of art, the modern “method” of impersonality and the “feeling of reality”, that is, the postulates of realism; it follows a re-crossing of Capuanian production, especially non-fiction (the contemporary Isms, For art, Art and science) and theatrical. The third chapter is aimed at tracing, in the production of southern ‘inspiration’ realism, specifically Apulian between the end of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century (Curci, Saponaro, among others, with a monographic attention to Francesco Bernardini: the “realist” short stories of The Bandit's Lover (1900) or Rustica Progenies (1885); the dramas with strong late-romantic, realist and psychological overtones: Rimorso, 1881, Bourgeois Charity, 1888, The Blind Man, 1885, Rupe tarpea, 1903), a specific “Capuan function”, more than Verga's: that is, the measure spread - uncertain between “writing of truth” and forms that predate and can be traced back to the bed of tradition (Stecchetti, Hugo, Dumas fils etc) or, contrastively, to twentieth-century and European outcomes, ibsenians and pre-Freudians - which also connotes Capuana's narration and theater in the crucible of realist formulation (the theatrical works Piccolo archive, 1885, Tristezza, 1887, Serena, 1899).

Abstract

The research project is structured according to a mobile internal structuring - which primarily involves a necessary relocation of Luigi Capuana's work - especially the dramaturgical and theatrical criticism ones - into the canon of modernity; and which, on the other hand, suggests a mapping of regional realism, investigating in this case the Apulian ones (with hints of the Lucanian ones), which takes into account the themes and ways of receiving national realism - and above all of Capuanian meaning – in regional literary production.
