The thesis deals with the process of intermediation between the elite of the city of Tetouan, capital of the former Spanish Zone of influence in Morocco (1912-1956), and the Spanish colonial administration, in order to define what were the trajectories of continuity, and what were the points of rupture, in the socio-economic and political role of the elite in the urban, regional and national landscape. Furthermore, a central issue in the thesis is the delineation of colonial legacies in post-colonial Morocco, especially the "question of the north", i.e. how the colonial division contributed to the emergence of a feeling of abandonment and marginalisation that turned into the political instance of refounding the Hizb Al-Islah Al-Watani (Party of National Reform). Although the party, the first nationalist organisation recognised by the colonial authorities in the whole of Morocco in December 1936, played a central role in the process of shaping the Moroccan nationalist movement as a whole, somewhat paradoxically in the post-colonial era the hypothesis of refounding it was explicitly linked to regionalist and localist rather than nationalist instances, which responded precisely to the progressive marginalisation of the Moroccan north from state and nation-building processes.

Abstract
Although the party, the first nationalist organisation recognised by the colonial authorities in the whole of Morocco in December 1936, played a central role in the process of shaping the Moroccan nationalist movement as a whole, somewhat paradoxically in the post-colonial era the hypothesis of refounding it was explicitly linked to regionalist and localist rather than nationalist instances, which responded precisely to the progressive marginalisation of the Moroccan north from state and nation-building processes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
