The endoparasites in goat farms: epidemiology, host-parasite interaction in indigenous breeds and influence on production. The aim of this study was to assess the spread of endoparasites in goat farms in Lombardy, with particular attention to the epidemiological aspects. Further, an other objective was to study the the host-parasite relationship in indigenous breeds in order to contribute to the enhancement of these breeds, taking into account the biological, social, ecological and economic value related to their breeding. The ultimate purpose of this research is to provide a practical contribute to implement the productions, in terms of quality, quantity and valorisation of local products. The specific objectives of this work were: • To assess the spread and to define the specific etiology of the gastrointestinal protozoal infections by Eimeria spp. in young subjects and in growth phase, in farms with different managements. • To investigate the possible direct effects of condensed tannins (Quebracho extract powder) ready- mix with food on natural coccidian infection in goat kids. Alternative methods of control of coccidiosis can be linked with the traditional one or can be a viable alternative in order to limit pharmacological interventions in the context of food production and also to reduce the release of chemical molecules in the environment. • To assess the presence and spread of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. in young subjects and in growth phase, in some areas of Lombardy particularly suitable for the dairy goat breeding; to detect risk factors that may contribute to the presence of these protozoa in farms.
