This dissertation aims at offering an overview of the main philosophical, literary, psychological, and neuroscientific theories explaining the nature of narratives and their role in human life. Such an overview will support and be supported by the analysis of various empirical studies concerning the use of narratives in multiple forms—such as books, visual arts, cinema, video games and virtual reality—for therapeutic purposes. I will also introduce the narrative medicine and narrative therapy approaches, along with their applications in medical practice and psychotherapy. Finally, I will highlight the main critical voices of the so-called ‘narrative turns’, pointing at the challenges and opportunities for future research and practice in the narrative field.
