The thesis is intended to provide a ‘map of the places’ in which theoretical reflection on language originated and developed in early 20th century Italian culture. The work was constantly supported by archival investigation, which made it possible to bring to light previously unpublished documents. The aim of the contribution was to illustrate the idea of language of the time, proposing a way of overcoming the stereotype that Italian linguistics in the early 20th century was provincial and isolated from the international context. 24 issues of the magazine La Cultura (1906-1935) and 205 linguistic and theoretical-linguistic entries in the Enciclopedia Italiana (1929-1937) were analysed. In addition to this, the relationship between linguistics and the philosophy of language between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century was illustrated. After that, the work is focused on analysing linguists' reactions to philosopher Benedetto Croce's theories on language. The contribution of Karl Vossler and Ciro Trabalza was analysed in relation to the concept of ‘grammar’ and the cases of Matteo Bartoli, Giulio Bertoni and Antonino Pagliaro in relation to the new conception of language understood as an individual creative activity. At the end, the theme of language education within the school context was explored in depth, looking at the figures of Giuseppe Lombardo Radice, Gemma Harasim, Rosa Agazzi and Antonio Gramsci.

Abstract
At the end, the theme of language education within the school context was explored in depth, looking at the figures of Giuseppe Lombardo Radice, Gemma Harasim, Rosa Agazzi and Antonio Gramsci.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
